We fight, we have differences, we don’t understand each other but in the end, we love each other and want to be together; this is Dice Media’s and Pocket Aces’ web series What The Folks.
What The Folks is a small, 5 episode web series, which revolves around Nikhil who gets in a situation where he has to live with his wife’s (Anita) parents for some weeks. The series shows the sweet and sour relationship of a man with his in-laws. All the married young men will definitely relate to them. This series is the journey of a modern family who is breaking the stereotypes and trying to overcome the generation gap.
This web series is directed by Ruchir Arun, who is a two-time National Award winner.
The show has been written by Anand Bhardwaj and Ayesha Nair.
From where the idea sparked
Ashwin Suresh, founder of Pocket Aces says, “We have seen umpteen number of shows about the stereotypical daughter-in-law, so we thought that it would be interesting to put a twist on that and understand the experience of today’s modern Indian son-in-law.” Adding to this, Anirudh Pandita, Founder, Pocket Aces says, “What The Folks’ is a slice-of-life dramedy that every young person and their family will relate to. We wanted to capture the various moments of love, laughter, joy, and occasional dysfunction that we all face on a daily basis.”
Breaking the stereotypes
There’s a common perception that Indian men are caught between souring relationships of their mothers and wives.
When Anita finds out that her parents lied about Nikhil’s age in the party because they were embarrassed that their daughter’s age is more than that of her husband, Anita takes the time out from her work and defends her husband on skype saying that they shouldn’t be embarrassed and accept Nikhil respectfully.
In this show, there is a gender switch but it doesn’t mean that Nikhil’s in-laws are treating him like a Bahu. That is the place where the show doesn’t lose its originality. It shows the discomfort that a person feels with their in-laws.
